Data is king. The more information you have on a prospective student, the more tailored your communications with them.

Thankfully, GeckoChat allows you to track URL parameters, allowing you to know where your conversations are coming from and giving you vital context to work from. With the addition of one line of code to your live-chat script, you'll be able to pass UTM or any other relevant information into a Custom Field, which can be synced directly back to your CRM system.

Getting started

Firstly, identify the live-chat channel that you'd like to be able to accept URL values.

To do this, head to Settings and click on your live-chat channel that you'd like to accept URL parameters. Copy and paste the embed code into a plain text editor. It'll look something like this:

<script>
    window.GeckoChatSettings = {
        account_id: 'xxXxXxXXxxXxXXx',
        auto_boot: true
    };
</script>
<script src="https://embed.geckochat.io"></script>

Now, we're going to need to add the following line to our script:

parse_query_string=true

If you've added it correctly to your script, it'll look like this:

<script>
    window.GeckoChatSettings = {
        account_id: 'xxXxXxXXxxXxXXx',
        auto_boot: true,
        parse_query_string: true
    };
</script>
<script src="https://embed.geckochat.io"></script>

Once you've embedded your updated code, its time to decide what values you'd like to add to your URL in order to populate custom fields in Gecko.

Let's imagine that we want to update the 'Year of entry' custom field and the 'Course of interest' fields. For each of the fields, go to Settings > Custom Fields and click into the custom field you'd like to track. Be sure to make a note of the Key.

Using this key, and knowing the value we'd like to update the custom field with, we can finally build the URL that we'd like to share:

https://www.gecko-university.ac.uk?course_of_interest={your_value_here}&year_of_entry=2021

For students who click the above link and initiate a conversation via a live-chat widget, their custom fields for Year of entry will automatically be updated with the value of 2021, and their course of interest will be whatever value you added!
