You may have noticed two tabs on the right-hand side of your form builder, labelled Contact Fields and Form Fields. In this article, we are going to take a look at the difference between the two and why it matters.
In simple terms, the reason we have two sets of fields in the system is because we want to track the student journey if they interact with our system multiple times and having two distinct set of fields allows us to do just that.
Here is a quick graphic outlining how data flows in the system. Our idea with this process is that our Contact record is the core record for an individual and always contains the latest information we have for them, whereas the Response record is a static snapshot of the data they submitted at the time.
In the above example, it's worth pointing out that any fields on your form will be recorded on your Response record, but only Contact fields will send data to your Contact and therefore update their information.
