How Self Check-in is enabled depends on the type of event type you plan on running:
Single Event - Click into your event, head to Edit > Location, and enable Allow check-in by time. Add a number in the Minutes before the event start time field. Students can check into your on-campus session or join the virtual stream this many minutes before the event is due to begin.
Single/Multiple Sessions - Click into your session and, on the Location card, enable Self Check-in and add a number in the Minutes before the event start time field. Students can check into their on-campus session or join their virtual stream this many minutes before the session/session time is due to begin.
Students are free to check in to any session or event after the event has finished, freeing you up to send reminders to check in!
